I visited the school in December in my capacity as Link Governor for Mathematics and met Mrs Summers, Head of Mathematics. It was the festive season and the department would probably win an award for the best decorated for Christmas!
There appears to have been a seamless change in Head of Department. Standards remain high in teaching, learning and behaviour with formalised monitoring in place with learning walks, sample book checks, skills checks and reviews of previous work. All teachers share the same departmental office space in the department where open discussions take place.
Pupil Premium students and those with SEND are monitored separately. A focus for the department this year is centred upon meeting the needs of higher achieving students. Monitoring and assessing is not all one-way, as there is also the opportunity for student feedback.
There are also opportunities for staff to keep abreast of the latest thinking and for CPD (Continued Professional Development).
I was made to feel very welcome in the department and will be visiting again sometime during this school year.
