Aims of Visit:
1. – Update Link governor on changes and achievements in the Department over the last year
2. – Understand current challenges in the Department
3. – Consider department SEF, including 2025 external exam results and plans to continue to raise standards
4. – Consider Safeguarding in the Art, Textiles and DT Departments
Staffing and Leadership
There have been positive developments in leadership and staffing this year, with responsibilities evolving across the departments. Staff have adapted well to their new roles and continue to work collaboratively as a strong and cohesive team. Following the retirement of Mrs Kelly and Mr Dingley, Mrs Aitken is now Head of Art, Design & Technology and Mr Cardwell is now supporting Design & Technology with woodwork.
Two Early Career Teachers have been appointed and are contributing effectively across Key Stages 4 and 5. They have been well supported through mentoring and professional development and have now secured permanent positions within the school. A new technician has also joined the team, strengthening operational systems and supporting the delivery of practical lessons.
Curriculum Development
Curriculum development remains a key strength. Students benefit from a broad and varied curriculum, particularly within Design & Technology, where projects span a wide range of creative and technical disciplines.
Across all subjects, there is a strong emphasis on developing students’ independence, reflective practice and resilience. Students are encouraged to evaluate their work critically, refine their ideas and build confidence in their creative decision-making.
The updated A Level Design & Technology specification has been successfully introduced, with teaching approaches adapted to meet the new requirements.
Student Outcomes
GCSE and A Level results in 2025 were very strong and compared favourably with national outcomes. Students with additional needs and those eligible for pupil premium support performed at or above target, reflecting the department’s inclusive approach and high expectations
Ongoing Priorities
Current priorities include:
1. Further developing student independence at GCSE
2. Strengthening exam technique and retrieval skills
3. Continuing curriculum refinement at A Level
4. Supporting professional development for staff at all stages of their careers
An external review of health and safety procedures in Design & Technology confirmed strong practice, with further improvements implemented where appropriate.
The visit recognised the departments as reflective, ambitious and committed to maintaining high standards in teaching, learning and student achievement.
