Zoom call with James Gourlay

Our A Level Music students were privileged to be able to listen to and question world-renowned Tuba player James Gourlay. Originally from Scotland, James began playing Tuba from the age of 10 and became so accomplished that, by the age of 18, was playing in the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra before joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

James has played on many notable movie soundtracks such as the original three Superman films and, more importantly for our A Level students, the first two Batman movies. “Batman Returns” features as a Set Work on the A Level Music course where students are required to study the mood and atmosphere that the music, written by Danny Elfman, creates. 

It was amazing to hear about the recording process that James went through and also how important his low-pitched tuba sound is in depicting the dark and mysterious character of Batman and the villains he faces. 

Mr Fisher, who organised the Zoom call with James who lives in Pittsburgh, USA, said, “ James is a formidable musician who is still playing at the highest level and we are extremely grateful for the time he spent with our students today. He gave words of encouragement and advice to them about their future careers as well as important insights into the music they are studying. It was a real honour to have him join us at Prince Henry’s via video-link.”
