The Y13 Applied Scientists enjoyed an excellent workshop at Thinktank, Birmingham on Wed 11th October. During the day they were able to learn more about DNA and carry out practical work in a laboratory using techniques to amplify DNA (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and then identify the DNA (electrophoresis). They used these skills to successfully identify who had brought a virus onto a hospital ward in a made up scenario. Students will now be able to apply the practical understanding they have gained to their exam which they will sit in January. Many students were also inspired to think about future careers in forensic laboratories.
