On Friday 17th April, Year 12 and Year 13 A Level Politics students were able to have an informal question and answer session with Lord Wills via Teams. Students had prepared a range of questions which prompted conversations on Lord Wills’ role in Gordon Brown’s cabinet as well as his experiences as a member of the House of Lords. Lord Wills offered candid thoughts on current affairs and the House of Lords, which he has argued for many years should be an elected body. He gave insights into the collegiate nature of the House of Lords which is in contrast with the adversarial politics of the Commons, discussing his friendship and current work with Theresa May and with Gordon Brown in particular. He put students at ease very quickly with humour and surprising openness; getting up to answer his doorbell he revealed that even peers of the realm dress down on Teams. The experience served to break down barriers to Parliament and the Lords in particular, and Lord Wills enthusiastically encouraged students to engage as fully as possible in political life at local as well as national levels.
