Our Curriculum

At Prince Henry’s, we hope to prepare all our students for their lives well beyond school by providing them with a wealth of opportunities, underpinned by a strong sense of values and a culture of high expectations.  Consequently, our curriculum provides students with a broad, traditional academic diet of subjects, enriched with opportunities to explore wider aspects of the Arts, STEM, Sport and the world of work. This philosophy is illustrated in recent changes made to KS3 and KS4 language provision and the introduction of GCSE Citizenship in Y9/10.  Our curriculum is impacted by the fact that our students join us in Y9 and each HOD has a clear vision for the transition between KS3-4-5. In the last few years, our intention for most subjects is that our students experience a broad KS3 curriculum and commence KS4 in Year 10, with Science, Maths and MFL being the exception. 

This approach is currently working well for us because we have seen strong outcomes in these three curriculum areas at KS4 in recent years, demonstrating that the journey from KS2 to KS4 has been positive. Enrichment is a strong characteristic of our curriculum, evidenced in the recent development of a Super-curriculum throughout Y9 and participation in the HE+ consortium for more able Sixth Form students (from Jan 2019).  The curriculum offered to students on Alternative Provision in The Lodge is intended to provide those students with a solid, foundation of academic qualifications, enriched with some vocational and life-skills work, whilst being flexible enough to meet the individual needs of those students and to prevent them from becoming NEET.  An example of the bespoke curriculum offer can be evidenced in the introduction of the Dare2Dream project. At Key Stage 5 our curriculum is intended to develop well-rounded students who are thoroughly prepared with the necessary academic qualifications and wider skills to be successful in Higher Education, on a training route or in employment. 

COVID – To continually evaluate the appropriateness of the curriculum across the school and for all pupils, so that progress isn’t affected by student absence. To continue to offer the full, broad range of subjects.
