Mark Robson visits Prince Henry’s on 6th March
The popular author Mark Robson was invited to talk to Year 9 in the Arts Centre on 6th March as part of our World Book Day celebrations. Mark specialises in fantasy novels including the ‘Imperial’ series and the ‘Dragon Orb’ series. A number of the 13 books published to date have been translated into different languages. He began by reading from his latest book ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ a fantasy adventure based on the mysterious happenings in the Bermuda Triangle.
Mark gave us an inspirational talk about his route to becoming an RAF pilot, and how determined he was to reach his goal. He gave himself short term targets such as attaining the required 80% in each exam as he came to it and practised flying by using a cardboard model. He was challenged to write a book while serving in the Falkland Islands, and eventually, after retiring from the RAF, published it himself. He worked tirelessly, visiting numerous bookshops in person to encourage them to stock it. His drive and ambition have brought him outstanding success in both careers.
The two workshops on creative writing in the Learning Resource Centre involved Year 9 students writing the introduction to a short story, and then re-writing it following various guidelines, including a framework of questions, and discussion of how the characters would feel and react to situations in the story. Mark Robson signed books for students and was then interviewed by three Year 9 students for ‘The Prince’s Herald’ our school newspaper for publishing on 13th March.

World Book Day at Prince Henry’s 2013
Our World Book Day celebrations at Prince Henry’s began with the visit of the author Mark Robson on 6th March, and continued with a very popular Book Swap event on World Book Day (7th March). Students and staff were invited to bring in books to swap before the event, and received vouchers for that number of books. They were then able to select books from the large number which had arrived by the beginning of the event! The Book Swap took place over two days, and a crowd of enthusiastic readers swarmed around the tables in the Learning Resource Centre. Any remaining books not swapped, were sold at 50p each with the money raised going to charity.
Year 9 completed a book and film quiz during the week in registration as part of the celebrations. The winners, who each received gift tokens as prizes, were Lauren Andow and Heather Court in joint first place, with Samuel Rooney in second place.
