We started our trip with a guided tour of Parliament. Entering both the House of Commons and House of Lords, we learnt about historical moments and the functions of each chamber. Seeing the houses which we have been studying was fascinating and seeing politicians in practise developed our prior understanding. It was very insightful and eye-opening.
After our tour we visited the Supreme Court. Coincidentally, on our way over, we witnessed the Commonwealth leaders entering Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration, a very special occasion we were lucky enough to see. In the Supreme Court, we could go into the court rooms where the highest cases of law are seen and tried and could sit in the chairs used by justices like Lady Hale.
Returning to the House of Commons after lunch, we were lucky enough to go into the public gallery and watch questions for the Education Secretary. We saw many politicians and figures, such as Bridget Philipson, Lee Anderson, Priti Patel, and Tulip Siddique. This was an amazing experience as we watched Philipson being questioned by M.Ps of her own party and opposition parties about the Government’s plans for the education system.
The visit really inspired me and helped me place my studies in perspective, it was an excellent opportunity to aid our understanding of the political and legal systems of the UK.
