U15 Boys’ Football Team Reach County Cup Final
Prince Henry’s Under 15s Football team have reached the final of the prestigious Worcestershire Schools Football Association County Cup for 2012/13. After a 2nd round win at Waseley Hills on penalties after coming back from 4 1 down with 10 minutes to go in normal time; and a comfortable quarter final victory over Trinity High of Redditch, the team faced a tough semi-final against Stourport High. The game began evenly with a few chances early on, before Stourport took the lead with a deflected 20 yard effort. This spurred Prince Henry’s into action, with Charlie Banning equalising after chasing a lost cause and forcing a goalkeeping error from Stourport’s number one. Just before half time, Tom Leonard seized on Callum Stayte’s through ball to slide the ball past the advancing keeper.
The second half was once again a tight affair until a ball straight down the heart of the Prince Henry’s defence led to Stourport’s equaliser. Prince Henry’s then went straight up to the other end, with Callum Stayte scoring from a shot from just inside the area. Stourport once again equalised with another good strike from distance giving Prince Henry’s keeper, Freddie Downes, no chance. Both sides made changes as tiredness kicked in on an energy sapping pitch. Prince Henry’s substitute Sam Roberts showed his pace to take on the Stourport defence before drilling home what would ultimately be the winning goal. There was still time for Stourport hit the post before the referee blew for full time.
At this stage it is unknown who Prince Henry’s opponents will be in the final in the New Year. This age group have shown great character all term often coming back from positions of adversity, well led by skipper Lewis Drew.
