What would you do if people wouldn’t give you a job based on how you looked, rather than your qualifications? That was the challenge many Caribbean migrants to Bristol faced when they arrived in the 1960s. This term our GCSE Geography students visited the St Paul’s area of Bristol, which was at the centre of 1960s bus boycott campaign ran by Bristol’s black community which sought to get equality when it came to job opportunities. Armed with clipboards and keen minds, the students looked for evidence of the cultural, economic and environmental differences around the city and looked the large amount of public artwork and graffiti in the city which marks its history. The classes also practised several fieldwork techniques and skills which they will be questioned on as part of their GCSE exams in the summer term.
