Gordon Grove 1938 – 2013
I am sorry to have to inform you that Gordon Grove passed away peacefully on Friday 31st May, following a short illness.
Gordon was a true Henrician, having attended Prince Henry’s as a pupil from 1949 – 56, returning to the school in 1962 as a teacher. As well as teaching Maths, he taught PE (his love of Prince Henry’s rivalled only by his passion for Aston Villa), and was a key figure in the school’s CCF corps. He retired as Head of Mathematics in Summer 1994, but remained involved with the school in a variety of roles, not least as a lynchpin of the Old Henricians – the network for our former students, for which he produced regular newsletters and updates.
You may be interested to read an article which Gordon wrote for the 1994 Henrician reflecting on his time at Prince Henry’s as a pupil and a teacher, together with an article written for the same edition in which he talked about the role of the Old Henricians as an important part of the Prince Henry’s community.
He was a kind, thoughtful and caring human being, and, “a gentleman of the old school”. Many former students and colleagues have shared their memories of Gordon with us during the past few days and we have posted these in a blog on this page. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gordon’s family during this very sad time. His son Andrew and daughters Amanda and Sarah all followed in their father’s footsteps, attending Prince Henry’s as pupils. Gordon’s funeral will be taking place on Tuesday 11th June: following an earlier private family service, a thanksgiving service celebrating Gordon’s life and achievements will be held at Evesham Methodist Church at 12.30pm.
