I recently visited the Maths department in my role as Link Governor and met with Mrs Summers, Head of Maths.
Summer 2024 saw some excellent results in Maths at both GCSE and A Level, with 79% of students attaining Grade 4 or above at GCSE. As good as these results were, the culture of the Maths Department is to continually strive for better.
There is a strong emphasis on revision and revision methods including the use of ‘Maths Watch’, which also allows staff to monitor usage. As well as online monitoring, more traditional book checks are also carried out.
Sixth Form ‘buddies’ from Years 12 & 13 were proving beneficial not only to Years 9 and 10, but also for the buddies themselves who benefit in many ways, including as their volunteering skill for DofE.
The whole department has a collective mindset and all are involved in further training and CPD.
Transitions were always crucial stages for students. Mrs Summers and I discussed the transition from Middle to High School, as well as from Sixth Form to university or other destinations for our students.
I would like to thank Mrs Summers for her time (and tea!) on my visit.
