As link governor for PE, it was a pleasure to visit the department and meet with the Head of PE, Mr Thompson and Assistant Head Teacher, Mrs Webb, just before Christmas.
We observed three classes. First, a Year 12 BTEC PE class where students were receiving feedback on a unit test they had taken the previous week. The students were motivated to improve and commented that they were really enjoying BTEC PE, saying that it was well taught and interesting. Then we visited a Year 9 Girls’ class practising netball skills to music in the gym and a Year 9 boys’ class playing football on the all-weather pitch. All the students were well behaved, took part enthusiastically in the practical activities and showed good knowledge when answering questions the teacher asked.
Mr Thompson reported that the department has had a successful sporting year. He is looking forward to implementing his plans for further improvements to the curriculum in the coming year, such as specialised coaching prior to practical assessments for GCSE, A Level and BTEC students and IPAD recording of practical activities to enhance technical performance.
Thank you, Mr Thompson, for an informative and interesting tour.
