On Tuesday 20th February, I met with Mr Bullas, Director of Music. As the new link Governor to Music at Prince Henrys, this was my first visit.
Mr Bullas made me very welcome and gave me a good insight into the Music Departmentand what it has to offer to the students.
I was very impressed with the Year 9 introduction to a Brass Instrument; all students get to learn a brass instrument with some going on to develop their skill and interest further. The equipment available to the students is of a high quality: instruments and computer equipment, each student having their own headphones and screen to enable them to write their own Music.
Mr Bullas and Mr Fisher are very happy with the new location of the Music Department and feel it has made life so much better being out of the main school building, allowing students to make wonderful sounds with more freedom. The department also offer drumming booths and private rooms to practice instruments as well as some very much needed storage space.
I was very interested in the BTEC option Prince Henry’s offers currently at “A Level”, which is more of a practical course and therefore appealing to the “Pick up and play” Student. Mr Bullas indicated it would be a great asset to the department, Students, and the school to encourage a larger Music take up in Year 10, and hopefully leading into Year 12 /13 (A level). Mr Bullas is keen to enhance the curriculum with different courses including BTEC Musical Theatre.
I was able to stay and watch the Concert Band for a while, it was great to see so many students attending an after-school club. The students were all well-disciplined and keen to start their practice session. It sounded great too.
I look forward to meeting with Mr Bullas again and having the opportunity to observe some lessons taking place.
