Governor Visit (Geography) – 20th March 2023
As the link Governor for Geography, it was a pleasure to visit the department. I was warmly welcomed by the Head of Geography, Mr Cains, along with two staff members Miss Jackson and Mrs Deakin who took the time to answer my questions and talk me through areas of their work, as well as allowing me to observe a couple of lessons in progress (one year 10 and one year 13).
We discussed the department vision statement, SEF and exam results and how these are monitored. I was very interested to hear about the positive impact that the introduction of the BTEC Travel & Tourism for Year 10 has made, which links very well into the department and which was introduced last September. There are currently 9 students undertaking this particular course.
Mr Cains and his team showed me around the classrooms and recent additions to wall displays, including a map of destinations that students had been to, along with their photographs from the location, suggested books for students to read, biographies of famous Geographers and also possible career options / pathways they could explore.
We talked about the extra-curricular activities on offer, including the upcoming field trip to Amsterdam and what, (if any), Governor support may be useful, so I hope to be able to share insights in terms of Early Careers recruitment processes, that may be helpful for these students in the future.
