The annual Prince Henry’s 1st x1 vs Old Boys Football Fixture took place on Monday, despite the adverse weather conditions. Both grass pitches failed a pitch inspection, so the game had to take place on the Astro-turf. Throughout the match temperatures were below freezing and, added to a high wind chill factor, it is a credit to all involved that the game was played in great spirit.
Despite the late withdrawal of key player Louis Brown due to work commitments, the Old Boys began the game in a positive manner with the midfield trio of Nick Waller, Ant Raybaud and Jamie Lee causing the current school team problems. The Old Boys did well to keep danger man Alex Hammerton quiet, with Old Boys Chris Vose being assigned to man mark the dangerous Hammerton. In fact, it was the Old Boys who took the lead when substitute Alfie Dawes’ first touch of the ball was a left footed strike into the bottom corner of PHHS Keeper James Stone’s goal. This lead to a response from PHHS, who had a goal disallowed for handball. At half-time the Old Boys deservedly lead 1 – 0.
The second half was a different story, with a rejuvenated PHHS side controlling the game. The Old Boys, who had made a number of substitutions at the interval to utilise their entire squad of 16, relied on quick counter attacks, to take advantage of the pace of Sean Brain. Brain had two good chances to extend the Old Boys’ lead but just failed to capitalise. With 10 minutes remaining, Harry Parker brought the game level for Prince Henrys and the Old Boys were glad to hear the final whistle as tiredness was beginning to set in. The game finished 1 – 1 and the NN Cresswell Cup will be shared for 6 months each by 1st XI coach Mr Thompson and Old Boys Coach Mr Price.
