English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition

Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition

On Tuesday 25th January three students in Year 10 and Year 11 took part in the second heat of the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking competition. Matthew Smith (Year 11), Beatrice Williams (Year 11) and Barnaby Gibbons (Year 10) competed against other local schools and were successful in obtaining a place in the Regional Finals.

Barnaby, in his role as Chairperson, introduced the Guest Speaker from the opposing team and summarised the key points expertly to conclude. Matthew, our Speaker, delivered an impressive five-minute speech on the topic of the charitable status of private schools. As Questioner, Beatrice had to think on her feet and pose pertinent and probing questions to the Guest Speakers from the other teams. All three students impressed the judges and we are now looking forward to the Regional Finals!
