One of the joys of being a teacher and a staff governor at Prince Henry’s is the variety of events that we are invited to attend. I’ve been to many sports matches, musicals, plays and performances of all kind, but tonight’s Arts Awards evening was a first for me.
The Arts Award has been described to me as The Duke of Edinburgh Award for those with creative flair! You don’t climb Snowdon or camp out in the rain, but the effort that goes into the planning and execution requires just as much effort. Through the Arts Award young people not only have fun but also gain a nationally recognised qualification, enabling them to progress into further education and employment. It has five levels, four of which (Explore, Bronze, Silver, Gold) are on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Just like the Duke of Edinburgh Award you have until you are 25 to complete the Award.
The performers tonight had written scripts, directed, sung songs and entertained. They printed tickets, made coffee, baked cakes and even filled goody bags for us all to take away. The Sixth Form students worked with the Year 9 and Year 10 students to produce an evening of entertainment based around the theme of The Seven Deadly Sins. The evening ended with the audience joining the students to sing a couple of Christmas carols. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thanks to everyone who was involved.
