Welcome to Prince Henry’s High School Science Department. We are a team of 16 enthusiastic and talented Science teachers, supported by two excellent technicians. We work as a close knit team, sharing ideas, resources and teaching styles. Science is a core subject and studied by all students. It offers the students the chance to consider the world around them; look to see how materials work and interact, how our bodies work and how we stay alive as well as how the laws of forces and motion affect our lives.

Students use practical work to find out relationships between variables and then draw conclusions from patterns in their data. We are increasingly looking at ‘How Science Works’, to see how Science is seen and used in the media.

The Science Department underwent an Ofsted subject inspection in September 2011 and we were delighted to be judged ‘outstanding’.

In Year 9 students are taught the relevant Key Stage 3 curriculum whilst also starting the study of GCSE Science. Students normally have two or three teachers to cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics in 7 x one hour periods per fortnight. The aim is to offer a balanced, interesting and informative introduction to the three sciences.

At Key Stage 4 we deliver all three science subjects. There are two main pathways that students may follow:

Combined Science (Trilogy) leading to 2 GCSEs or, Separate Sciences (GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics) leading to 3 GCSEs at the end of Year 11

Courses followed: AQA Combined Science (Trilogy), Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Most pupils receive 10 hours of science lessons per fortnight during the two year course which enables them to complete both curriculum content and practical work. Separate Science students receive 12 hours a fortnight.

Students sit all exams at the end of Year 11 and follow the Combined Science route achieving 2 GCSEs or Separate Science leading to GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There is no course work element and GCSEs are 100% exam. Students do take part in a number of required practicals during the course as well as extra practicals to develop skills and strengthen learning opportunities.

We are thrilled that a high number of our students continue to study Science A levels at Prince Henry’s and many then go on to study a range of Science related degrees at University or take up Science related vocations.

We offer A Level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students study for 9 lessons a fortnight and usually have two teachers to deliver the course.

Courses followed: OCR Biology A, AQA Chemistry A, AQA Physics A

We aim to engage and inspire students with Science during their time at Prince Henry’s by offering a range of exciting opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. (see STEM page)

These opportunities have included:-

  • Science Magician Show
  • VEX Robotics
  • A Level Science Live
  • Physics Olympics
  • Planetarium
  • A Level Trip to Bristol Zoo
  • Biology Visit from Warwick University
  • Whizz Bang on Activities Day
