Our aim in the Mathematics Department is to encourage and develop pupils’ interest and aptitude in Mathematics, alongside improving their understanding and knowledge, enabling them to tackle mathematical problems with confidence. Pupils in all years are taught using a range of activities and resources designed to complement the learning of all students.
We expect students to arrive to all Maths lessons fully equipped with pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, compasses and a scientific calculator. There is a non-profit making shop operated by the department where pupils may purchase the correct equipment.
Key Stage 3
Liaison with the local Middle Schools ensures a smooth transition into High School. Students are set according to a common test sat at the end of Year 8 alongside teacher recommendations.
During Year 9, pupils begin work on the AQA GCSE 2015 Mathematics syllabus with particular focus on the fundamental skills they will need to continue progressing through Years 10 and 11.
Pupils are taught for 3 hours per week. Each half term, pupils will sit a test based on the work they have covered in lessons. The results of these tests, alongside classwork, homework and general attitude will determine any set change that may take place.
Key Stage 4
Pupils in Year 10 and 11 will continue to follow the AQA GCSE 2015 Mathematics syllabus which will be assessed by 3 exams (1 non-calculator and 2 calculator) taken at the end of Year 11. Students are taught for 7 hours a fortnight and will continue to be regularly assessed through half termly tests and several more extensive mock exams.
Students in Year 12 & 13 are following the new AQA Mathematics syllabus and are taught for 9 hours per fortnight. This is a 2 year course which includes Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics as compulsory elements and culminates in 3 exams at the end of the second year.
Students who achieve a Grade 8 or 9 at GCSE can also opt to study A Level Further Mathematics. An additional 3 exams are required for this qualification.
We were excited to have been selected as an early adopter school for the Core Maths qualification. This is a new level 3 qualification taken through Years 12 and 13. It is aimed at those students who are not planning on taking A level Mathematics but still wish to continue studying the subject.
The main topics covered in the course are Statistics, Probability, Finance and Percentages, Modelling and Decision Maths.
The focus for each lesson is a real life problem that can be modelled using Maths in a relevant and useful way. We know that the skills developed in the study of Mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help students keep up these essential skills. The Maths involved will particularly support the study of subjects such as Biology, Business Studies, Geography and Psychology as well as helping students keep their Maths skills at the level required to enter the teaching profession.
