Governor Visit (DT Food, HSC and Sociology)

Governor Visit (DT Food, HSC and Sociology)

With the school organisation now returned to normal, I have been able to resume my visits to the departments for which I am the Link Governor. An important part of the link governor role is to establish and maintain a relationship with our departments, to oversee this particular area of the school and to provide support and challenge.

I met with Mrs Cox, and was shown around the new Design Technology, Food and Art building that opened in the summer term. An impressive learning environment, I was particularly struck by how light the rooms are and the storage facilities for both students work and lesson materials are purpose built and a huge improvement.

We discussed the 2021 examination analysis and the latest department self-evaluation report. The department has undergone some changes over the last few years with a change in the qualifications available, and there is now a spread of options available at Level 2, GCSE, Level 3 and A Level providing choice for a wide range of students. Sociology is a new A level option and is proving to be popular. Many students who choose to take these subjects at Level 3 and A level continue to further education in areas such as nursing, childcare and food technology.

The staff in this department often play an important pastoral role to their students. Their appreciation was evident whilst I was there, with the delivery of a beautiful orchid and card for Mrs Cox’s birthday!
