SEND DEPARTMENT VISIT
It was a pleasure to meet with Mrs Baston, Head of Learning Support at Prince Henry’s High School.
During our meeting we discussed last year’s excellent SEND results. The Department’s hard work, care and dedication has enabled these students to flourish as individuals and achieve their potential.
The Learning Support Department’s focus is on those children with educational needs (34 on register as at October 2018). This is a low figure for a school the size of Prince Henry’s. Another group that come under the SEND umbrella are a larger group of children (60 – 70 as at October 2018) on what is called the Additional Needs Register, who are monitored throughout their time at PHHS. Mrs Baston and her team also work with those students with behavioural issues. Their determination to help the diverse range of students is obvious in the very genuine, caring way Mrs Baston speaks.
A further topic we discussed was the recruitment and retention of Learning Support Assistants. The LSAs at PHHS are invaluable and Mrs Baston is looking to increase the LSA to student ratio.
We visited the Learning Support room where students go to have tailored lessons and the new Learning Support calm room which is taking shape and provides a calm space for students to go when things are a little too much.
We would like to thank Mrs Baston for our meeting, and congratulate her and her team on last year’s results and thank them all for the invaluable work they do within Prince Henry’s.
